Before opening your inbox or beginning a shift, you can bring the work ahead to God: the people you will meet, the decisions you need to make and the limits you already feel. Use this short prayer before work as it stands, or add the task that is on your mind.

Lord Jesus, be with me in the work ahead. Give me patience with people, honesty in my decisions and care for the details that affect someone else. When I feel rushed, help me pause long enough to listen. Show me what needs my attention, and give me humility to ask for help. Amen.

Two Bible verses to read before work

Colossians 3:17: let faith shape words and actions

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Colossians 3:17 · BSB

The surrounding passage, Colossians 3:12–17, calls a Christian community toward compassion, patience, forgiveness, love and gratitude. Verse 17 brings both speech and action into that picture. Applied to a workday, it asks more than whether a task gets finished: it also raises the question of how we treat the people involved.

For example, you might ask for patience before explaining something a second time, or for honesty before admitting a mistake. The verse does not promise that faithful work will always receive praise, a promotion or an easy day.

James 1:5: ask for wisdom when you do not know

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

James 1:5 · BSB

James introduces this invitation while writing about trials and perseverance in James 1:2–8. Asking for wisdom acknowledges a need; it is not a claim that every first impression must be God’s answer.

Before a difficult decision, your response might be: “God, help me see what I am missing and listen to someone who understands this better.” Then take the practical step of checking the facts or asking a question. Short prayers for different workdays

Before a busy shift

God, there is more waiting for me than I can hold in my head at once. Help me recognize the next important task, give it proper care and communicate when I need support. Keep me attentive to the people behind each request. Amen.

Before a meeting or a first day

Lord, help me arrive ready to listen. Give me courage to ask what I do not understand and clarity to explain what I know. Let me contribute without needing to have every answer, and welcome the contribution of others. Amen.

Before a difficult conversation

Jesus, You know the frustration I am carrying. Help me describe what happened honestly, hear the other person and speak without trying to wound. Give me courage to address the problem and wisdom about the help or boundaries that are needed. Amen.

If you are starting the day exhausted, you may prefer the prayer for strength. If worry is what you most need to put into words, begin with the prayer for anxiety.

Give Scripture a place in your day.

Make the prayer specific to your work

You do not need a different prayer for every job. Change one sentence so that it names the responsibility in front of you:

  1. Name the task. “I need to explain a delay to a customer,” or “I am learning a new part of this job.”
  2. Name the help you need. Ask for patience, attention, courage or wisdom rather than only asking for the task to disappear.
  3. Choose one response. Prepare the information, ask for clarification or arrange a time to talk. Prayer and preparation can belong together.

This also fits work that happens outside a paid job, such as caring for a relative or managing a household. Name the people who depend on your care and the support you need yourself.

Can I pray for success at work?

Yes. You can bring hopes about a project, an opportunity or providing for your household into prayer. You can also ask what a good outcome would mean for the other people affected, not only for your own recognition.

Neither of the passages above makes success a guaranteed reward for saying the right words. Leave room to ask for help, reconsider a plan or acknowledge disappointment. Praying for patience does not mean that mistreatment must go unaddressed.

You can say this prayer in the morning or before an evening or overnight shift. The point is the work you are bringing to God, not the hour on the clock.

A small way to return tomorrow

Choose a moment when you can safely pause before starting work. Read one of the two verses, name one concern and say the prayer in your own words. If you miss that moment, use the next suitable break.
