A prayer of gratitude, with Bible verses

Pray a thoughtful prayer of gratitude with Bible verses from 1 Thessalonians 5 and Psalm 107, plus a simple way to notice everyday gifts.

On this page

Gratitude does not require calling everything good. It can begin by noticing something good within a complicated day: a shared meal, a person who listened, or enough energy for one more step. This prayer gives those ordinary gifts a place in your conversation with God.

A prayer to begin

Father, thank You for the gifts I often pass by: the people who care for me, the food that sustains me, and moments of unexpected kindness. Help me notice without comparing my life to someone else’s. Let gratitude make me generous with what I have, and honest about what still hurts. Amen.

Giving thanks without denying difficulty

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 · BSB

These short instructions belong to Paul’s closing encouragement to a community. Giving thanks in every circumstance is not the same as giving thanks for every harmful thing. Prayer and gratitude can coexist with lament, questions and a need for change.

Psalm 107:1–3

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy and gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.

Psalm 107:1–3 · BSB

Psalm 107 opens by remembering God’s enduring goodness and a people gathered from different places. Later sections describe distress and deliverance. Gratitude here has a story: it remembers where help was needed and recognizes the help that came.

Name a gift, then respond

  1. Notice three concrete things from today. Replace “everything” with details: a warm drink, a message, a safe journey.
  2. For one of them, name the person or effort behind it. Consider offering a specific thank-you.
  3. Choose one way to pass on care: share a meal, listen without rushing, or help with a practical task.

You can revisit this page at the end of a day and name different gifts each time. The prayer stays available without a streak or a score. If gratitude feels far away today, begin with one honest sentence rather than forcing a feeling.
