A prayer for strength, with Bible verses

Find a prayer for strength, read Isaiah 40 and Philippians 4 in context, and make room for a small, faithful next step.

On this page

Some days, strength looks less like a breakthrough and more like doing the next necessary thing. You can bring tiredness, uncertainty and unfinished responsibilities into prayer without pretending they are easy. Begin with these words, then change them to name what is actually before you.

A prayer to begin

God, You know where I am weary. Give me strength for the work that is mine today, wisdom to recognize my limits, and humility to receive help. Keep me from measuring my worth by what I can finish. When the next step feels small, help me take it faithfully. Amen.

Strength that makes room for weariness

Isaiah 40:28–31

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out. He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:28–31 · BSB

Isaiah 40 addresses a people who feel forgotten. The passage begins with who God is before it speaks about renewed strength. Its images of running and walking leave room for different seasons of life. Waiting here is not a promise that every difficulty will disappear on our schedule.

Philippians 4:11–13

I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances. I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound. I am accustomed to any and every situation—to being filled and being hungry, to having plenty and having need. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:11–13 · BSB

Paul speaks about contentment in both abundance and need. His words about strength belong to that setting, rather than promising success at every goal. You might respond by naming a circumstance you cannot immediately change and asking how to live faithfully within it.

A small practice for today

  1. Name one responsibility that feels heavy. Be specific: a conversation, a shift at work, or caring for someone.
  2. Ask for the kind of help that task needs: patience, courage, rest, practical support or a clearer boundary.
  3. Choose one manageable action. If you need someone else’s help, asking for it can be that action.

Return to the prayer when your capacity changes. A short prayer on a hard afternoon is not a lesser prayer than a long one on a peaceful morning. If you are unsure how to begin, use our guide to praying Scripture; if your need is more about worry than exhaustion, explore the prayer for anxiety.
